Average Processing Times – Australian Partner Visas 2026

Average Processing Times for Australian Partner Visas - How long really?
How long does an Australian Partner Visa really take?
If you are an Australian with a partner in the Philippines, Indonesia, Vietnam, Thailand or another Southeast Asian country, you have probably seen some frightening numbers online.
Two years. Three years. Four years.
And now we are seeing social media posts warning couples about seven- or eight-year Partner Visa processing times.
No wonder Australian couples panic.
But after 17 years as a Registered Migration Agent, I have learned that there is a very important difference between the Department of Home Affairs' published processing times and what individual couples actually experience.
And that distinction matters.
I've Watched the Department Change Its Name — and Its Processing Times
When I started in the migration industry, Australian immigration was administered by the Department of Immigration and Citizenship.
Then came the Department of Immigration and Border Protection.
Today, it is the Department of Home Affairs.
The department names have changed. The systems have changed. Visa processing priorities have changed.
But one thing has remained remarkably consistent:
The Department's published processing times can look very different from the experience of a well-prepared Partner Visa applicant.
I have lost count of the number of times our clients have contacted us in shock because their visa had been granted sooner than they expected.
Their reaction is often:
“But we thought it was going to take years!”
That's because the number published by the Department is not a promise that your particular application will take that long.
What Does the Department's Processing Time Actually Mean?
The Department describes its processing-time information as a guide based on recently decided applications. It also makes clear that Partner Visa processing times vary and that applicants can experience longer processing times than expected.
As of August 2026, the Department's published median processing time for provisional/temporary Partner visas is 23 months.
That sounds alarming if you read it as:
“Every Partner Visa takes 23 months.”
But that's not what the statistic means.
A median is a measurement of a group of recently decided applications. It is not a personalised prediction for your application.
And the Department itself says that processing times are affected by factors including the volume of applications, the information provided and the way applications are prioritised.
These Are Global Processing Figures
There is another important point that often gets missed.
The Department operates a global processing model for Partner Visas. Applications can be processed at offices inside or outside Australia, and the processing location is not determined simply by the applicant's nationality or location.
So when you see a published global processing figure, don't automatically assume it represents the experience of an Australian–Filipino couple, an Australian–Indonesian couple or an Australian–Vietnamese couple.
Your application is your application.
The quality, completeness and circumstances of that application matter.
The Biggest Difference Is Often the Application Itself
This is where professional management becomes important.
A Partner Visa application is not simply a form that you complete and submit.
It is a substantial evidentiary application.
The Department specifically tells Subclass 309 applicants that providing all required information with the application (or as soon as possible afterwards) helps reduce processing delays.
That makes perfect sense.
If the Department needs additional information, the application cannot simply move straight through to a decision. That means a decision to grant or a decision to refuse!
Instead, the applicant would receive a Request for Information, commonly known as an RFI or s56, and sometimes a more scary one called a Natural Justice Letter (s57), which means they need a very good reason not to refuse your application!
An RFI always requires additional documents, explanations, evidence or clarification.
And every time an application needs additional information, there is another piece of work that has to be completed and assessed.
That can add time! Significant time! 28 days to reply (which is sometimes extended by request) and a few months to process the information you send. A poorly prepared application could easily be blown out another 6 months to a year!
DIY Applications Versus Professionally Managed Applications
This is an area where the Department's historical statistics are revealing and alarming.
In its published FOI data for 2017–18, 60% of offshore Subclass 309/100 Partner applications were lodged without an appointed Registered Migration Agent. For onshore Subclass 820/801 applications, the figure was 55%.
The same data also shows that, among applications finalised without an agent, refusals occurred in both offshore and onshore Partner Visa programs.
The historical figures demonstrate that self-lodged and professionally represented applications have different outcomes, but they do not prove that every professionally managed application will be faster or that every DIY application will be refused. However there's a pattern which should not be ignored.
Do the sums!
- If 60% of applications are DIY, and
- 50% of these (60%) are refused, and
- those that are refused are normally preceded by time-consuming RFI's and Natural Justice Letters?
- Could we assume that explains a fair bit of the reported delays?
- And could we assume that professionally-prepared applications are probably substantially quicker?
Certainly worth considering, I would think!
What they do demonstrate is that representation, preparation and application quality are legitimate factors to take seriously.
So How Long Will YOUR Partner Visa Take?
That's the question I prefer to answer.
Not:
“What does the internet say?”
Not:
“What is the scariest number I can find on social media?”
But:
“What does your application look like?”
- Are you applying for a Subclass 309?
- Are you applying from the Philippines, Indonesia, Vietnam, Thailand or another country?
- How long have you been together?
- What evidence do you have?
- Is your relationship evidence properly organised?
- Are the sponsorship and visa requirements being addressed correctly?
- Are your supporting documents complete?
- Are there issues that need to be explained before the application is lodged?
These questions matter.
A Well-Prepared Application Gives You the Best Starting Point
- Nobody can guarantee how quickly the Department will decide a Partner Visa.
- Neither can a Registered Migration Agent.
- But you can control the quality of the application you submit.
- And that is where specialist experience matters.
At Down Under Visa, we have been helping Australian couples and their overseas partners since 2009.
We know Partner Visas.
- We know the evidence.
- We know the common problems.
- And we know how important it is to get the application right from the beginning.
So when you see a social media post warning that your Partner Visa will automatically take three, five, seven or eight years, don't panic.
- Look at your application.
- Look at your evidence.
- Look at how it is being prepared and managed.
The Department's published processing time is a useful guide — but it is not your personal visa forecast.
And your Partner Visa deserves more than a number on a website.
It deserves a professionally prepared application built around your relationship, your evidence and your future together in Australia.

Who are Down Under Visa? Who is Jeff Harvie?
Jeff Harvie and the Down Under Visa team have been doing this for a lot of years! Down Under Visa have brought thousands of couples to Australia from South East Asia over the years. Mostly from the Philippines, but we help increasing numbers of couples where the visa applicant is from China, Thailand, Vietnam or Cambodia. And what this means is we see a lot of success....and we also see failures when people go it alone after talking to their mate, or their relative, or that minimal-care-no-responsibility Facebook group run by Steve and Maribeth based on their own visa application! One application, and they feel qualified to advise others! It's not even LEGAL to do that!
Want to bring your sweetheart to Australia from The Philippines, Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia or Southeast Asia? Get a FREE VISA ASSESSMENT today! It won't take you long, and you will be rewarded with a clear and detailed assessment that will tell you everything you need. One assessment only!
